Competitors are given a Route Card which they use to note down any markers they see en route. This proves that the team took the correct route by successfully deciphering the clues. At each checkpoint (there are usually between 6 and 12) a marshal will record the time you arrived. Points are deducted for each full minute late you are. If you’re early, you’ve probably went the wrong way!
Before you leave each checkpoint the marshal will hand you your next clue to get you to the next checkpoint.
Nav rallies are more competitive than Scatters and require higher levels of concentration from both driver and navigator. Good map reading skills are essential and a head torch and roamer come in handy. There are different levels of clues for novice, intermediate and expert teams so getting started in navigational rallies is easy.
Navigational Rallies are a test of competitors’ driving, navigating and timekeeping ability and involve 2 to 4 hours of competition on superb country roads. The crew of two receive a series of cryptic route instructions from which they must work out the correct route on their map. This route must then be driven in the allocated time. Taking the wrong route or taking too long leads to penalties, the crew with the least penalties wins the rally. Simple!
Nav rallies are usually held at night on open public roads and, like all GUMSC run events, are totally legal, and permits for events are awarded by the Motor Sport Association for the UK (MSA) and the routes are approved by the local Motor Sport Governor. They are slightly more expensive to enter than Scatter Rallies, costing £20 - £30 on average.
GUMSC runs the annual Over and Under Navigational Rally usually on the lesser known roads of Ayrshire. Edinburgh University Motosport Club have their annual Nuit Blanche on the east cost. These events are ideal for anyone looking for something more serious than a scatter and usually cater for all levels of competitor. There are excellent prizes up for grabs but check your insurance before you compete as you may need to get extra cover for the night.
